There is no doubt that Youtube has completely changed the world of belly dance lessons and belly dance learning. It is nearly inconceivable to remember how we learned of other belly dancers, not to mention the wonderful stars of the golden era.

My belly dance education, other than my tutor Sausan, was from the incredible American publication named "The Belly Dance Book", edited by Tazz Richards. This publication actually had pictures of Taheia Carioke and Samia Gamal; to me, this was as gold.

Can you imagine the thrill when it became possible to just "Google" these names and view their dance footage. Access to belly dance performance lessons and teaching videos not only democratises the belly dance scene, it also poses some questions. The first that comes to mind is why is it that not every devoted artist or celebrity belly dancer has an Internet website. Do these performerslack the desire, Internet entrepreneurship or business acumen to capitalise this devastating universal medium?

For example, for for some time Dina of Egypt has been accepted as the favourite Cairo belly dancer, yet her routines are only available to other dancers from phone cameras filmed in poorly lit nightclubs. There is no website nor even short demos to entice us to pay for any professionally filmed dance material. Once again, maybe the fame Dina has is is all she wants, however, I do wonder what expert advice she has received about the fact that many others are making profits from her wonderful talent. Does Dina know that other people are getting rich financially from the views their Youtube channels attract by using her name.

As well as Dina, there are many others such as Sadie and Aziza who have received recognition and here's hoping money through having the benefits of wonderful videos, clans of web followers worldwide and access to publice their latest DVD or belly dance classes.

The next question is does having easy access to our bellydance heroins detract from their mystique? When we see Aziza in teaching mode and then if we are lucky enough to catch her in the flesh, it is really more wonderful. My believe is that the computer monitor medium of the laptop computer can never do justice to a real performance. She is, however, a belly dancer who has created followers and prestige through smart Internet business.

Finally, there are some of us who desire to find with others online and also believe to put ourselves out there. For some, the web is a non commital source to be used for watching, consuming and occasional posting. I feel unhappy, whether it's misplaced or not that some of our most loved dancers may have missed the boat on this one. You can bet your last Dollar that people around the world are most certainly pulling in the benefits.
