There is no doubt that Internet video has completely revolutionised the world of belly dance lessons and belly dance learning. It is nearly inconceivable to remember how we learned of other belly dancers, not to mention the amazing stars of the golden era.



My own belly dance education, other than my tutor Sausan, was from the fantastic U.S. publication named "The Belly Dance Book", edited by Tazz Richards. This publication had images of Taheia Carioke and Samia Gamal; to me, this was beyond compare.



Imagine my excitement when it became possible to simply search in Google these names and watch the dance steps. Access to belly dance performance lessons and teaching videos not only makes fair the belly dance scene, it also poses some questions. The first one that comes to mind is how is it that not every devoted performer or celebrity belly dancer has got an website. Do these performerslack the drive, Internet entrepreneurship or business acumen to exploit this new global medium?



Here's what I mean, for many years Dina of Egypt has been accepted as the favourite Cairo bellydancer, yet her choreographies are often only available to other belly dancers from phone cameras filmed in badly lit nightclubs. I can find no web presence nor even short demos to tantalise us to buy any well filmed belly dance material. Again, maybe the renown Dina enjoys is enough, however, I do wonder what expert advice she has been given about the fact that many people are profiting from her wonderful talent. Will Dina know that others are gaining financially from the views their Youtube channels pull by including her trademark name.



As well as Dina, there are many others such as Sadie or Aziza who have received fame and here's hoping remuneration through having the additional benefit of incredible videos, tribes of web fans globally and access to market their current DVD or belly dance classes.



The next question is does having access to our bellydance heroins detract from their mystique? When we see Aziza in teaching frame of mind and then if we are lucky enough to catch her in the flesh, it is actually more wonderful. My contention is that the flat screen medium of the lcomputer cannot do justice to a live performance. She is, however, a bellydancer who has gained fans and prestige through smart web based trading.



To end, there are many of us who want to connect with others online and also dare to put ourselves out there. For many, the web is a passive source to be used for watching, consuming and on occasion posting. It makes me feel unhappy, whether it's misguided or not that many of our greatest bellydancers may have missed out on the boat on this one. You better believe your final pound that people out there are most certainly reaping the profits.
